The church played a huge part in the life of the people of medieval Betchworth. As well as every Sunday, there were 40 to 50 feast days a year when they were obliged to attend church.
Marriage, however, did not require a church service; it was contracted by mutual declaration of the partners.
Before the break with the Catholic Church in the 16th century, English churches were richly decorated with images and in their wills the people of Betchworth left money for masses to be said for their souls and for candles to be lit before those images.
